YOLEO Adjustable Dumbbell Set: No Base Needed Review
Five weight increments in one dumbbell, no docking base required. Here's who the YOLEO adjustable dumbbell weights actually suit.
The YOLEO Adjustable Dumbbell Set is worth buying if you want several weight options without a docking base taking up floor space. Each plate is 2.5 lb, so pulling one pair drops you 5 lb at a time, down to the bare 5 lb handle. Buy the double, not the single.

No Base. That’s the Whole Pitch.
The first thing I liked about these is that there’s no cradle to dock them into. A lot of the other adjustables on the market, you have to have a special base, you set the dumbbell down on it, that unlocks it, and only then can you change the weight. These YOLEO adjustable dumbbell weights skip that entirely. You just turn it and remove the plate you want to take off.
Each plate is two and a half pounds. Take one off this side, same thing on the other side, and you just took off five pounds. That turns a 25 into a 20. Each set of two you pull knocks it down another five.
Strip everything and you’re left with the bare dumbbell. That’s your 5 pounds. Putting it all back on is the same move in reverse: slide the plate in, turn it into place, lock it. Really, really easy.
People Think “Adjustable” Means a Big Plastic Tray
Most buyers picture the selector-pin style with the giant cradle, and that’s not what this is. There’s no pin, no dial-and-lift, no dock eating a square foot of floor. The rotary adjustment lives in the dumbbell itself.
Which also means the trade-off is different. You’re physically taking plates off and setting them somewhere, so it’s not a one-second swap mid-superset. It’s quick, but it’s a hands-on change. If you want to drop 10 pounds between sets without putting anything down, that’s not this.
The Plates Lie Flat and Don’t Roll Away
The rhombus plate shape means when you pull a pair off mid-set and drop them, they stay exactly where they land, no chasing a 2.5 lb plate across the floor mid-workout. In a small home gym, that’s not a trivial thing.
The handle is the other one. Big, cushioned, full-width grip. Look, I have really big hands, and I’m always worried these things are going to be too small for me. Perfect size even for hands like mine. Combined with the locking plates, nothing on these felt loose or rattly while I was moving them around on camera.
The matte finish and tight plate-to-handle fit make these look more like a premium fixed dumbbell than a budget adjustable, which I’d normally call irrelevant, except it means I’m not embarrassed to leave them on a shelf in a shared space.
Five Weight Increments for the Price of One Set
One set covers 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 pounds, the cost of five separate pairs of dumbbells in one. One set covers 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 pounds. If you went and bought those as five separate pairs of fixed dumbbells, you’d be buying ten dumbbells, paying for ten dumbbells, and storing ten dumbbells.
As a trainer, the range is what makes it useful across a whole session rather than one movement. Doesn’t matter if it’s curls, doesn’t matter if it’s lateral raises, doesn’t matter if it’s just forearm work. Lateral raises want a light weight, rows want the top of the range, and you don’t have to own two different setups to do both. For a home gym, at this price point, that is hard to beat. Current pricing is on the product page.
25 Pounds Is the Ceiling. Know That Going In.
The ceiling is 25 pounds, which limits you if you already press or row heavier on main lifts. If you’re already pressing or rowing heavier than that, you’ll outgrow the top weight on some movements even while the lower increments stay useful for accessory work.
The other small friction: the plates you remove have to go somewhere. There’s no base to park them on, which is the same thing that makes these convenient. You’re setting loose 2.5 lb plates on the floor next to you during a workout.
Buy the Double, Not the Single
You can buy these as a single or a double, and I recommend getting the double. A single is fine for one-arm rows and carries, but most of what you’d want this range for is two-handed: curls, presses, lateral raises. Buying one now and the second later usually costs more than just doing it once.
The 5-to-25 range is genuinely useful at both ends: a beginner can start on the bare handle and add a plate per side every few weeks without buying a second set, while someone more experienced still has a full range for accessory work, lateral raises, curls, carries, where heavier isn’t always better.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you do push-ups or planks on them?
Yes, that’s what the flat rhombus plate design is for. They sit flat on the floor instead of rolling, so renegade rows and push-up handles work. Just make sure the plates are locked in before you put bodyweight on them.
Do they need an app, account or anything electronic?
No. It’s a purely mechanical rotary adjustment with a safety lock, no batteries, no pairing, no subscription. Nothing to update and nothing to stop working in five years.
Do they work with an adjustable dumbbell stand?
They don’t require one, which is the point. A generic rack or shelf works for storage, but the proprietary bases made for pin-selector dumbbells won’t match this design. Floor or a plain shelf is fine.
Would these work as a gift for someone who doesn’t lift yet?
They’re a good fit for a beginner because of the bottom end. A total newcomer can start on the bare 5 lb handle and add 2.5 lb per side as they get stronger, so the gift doesn’t become useless in two months.
