Quick Verdict

Three years old, left outside every winter, never once put away, and the netting still isn’t ripped. I bought it for leaves and ended up using it all summer long for grass clippings instead. One of the best yard investments I ever made.

Buy if you:

  • Bag-mow and end up with piles of old clippings sitting on the lawn
  • Have a lawn tractor, zero-turn or ATV to tow it with
  • Deal with leaves every fall and are sick of raking
  • Have no garage room and need something that can live outdoors

I Bought It for Leaves. I Use It for Grass.

I bought this sweeper expecting a fall-only leaf tool and ended up pulling it behind the tractor all summer for grass clippings instead. That’s the whole pitch right there. I bought this YITAMOTOR 42″ Tow Behind Lawn Sweeper three years ago thinking it was a fall tool, and it is still my go-to every year whenever I need stuff to get picked up.

The bigger surprise was grass clippings. Bag-mowing leaves rows of old clumps baking into the turf by mid-July, and one pass with this thing puts them in the hopper before they smother anything. I pull it probably twice a month all summer now, then again every fall for leaves.

Three years and it still clears a pass of clumped clippings in one shot. That’s the whole review, really.

Where This Tow Behind Lawn Sweeper Sits

A tow behind lawn sweeper is the cheapest way to stop raking, and most of them look nearly identical on Amazon. Same mesh hopper, same brush gang, same universal hitch bar that claims to fit everything. You’ll see the same listing photo under five brand names.

The 42-inch width is the sweet spot in that crowd. Wider units exist, but they need a bigger tractor to pull them cleanly and they’re harder to store. Forty-two inches clears a yard in reasonable passes without fighting you around trees and beds.

One thing worth knowing from the data side: this one has slid in the rankings lately. It currently sits around #174,966 in Patio, Lawn & Garden against a 90-day average near #70,226, so it’s selling less than it was. Amazon still reports 200+ bought in the past month, which tells me it’s a seasonal swing rather than a product falling apart. Lawn sweepers move in spring and fall, not January.

This is also the same chassis family you see sold as a tow behind dethatcher or paired with a tow behind spreader or aerator. If you’re building out a tractor attachment setup, the sweeper is the one I’d buy first. It’s the one you’ll reach for weekly.

What Ownership Costs After the Purchase

Nothing. That’s the -to-ownership answer and it’s the part I’d want to know as a buyer.

What’s also funny about this is I leave it outside all year long. I don’t put it in whenever it’s wintertime. I literally just let the elements just do whatever it wants to do. Snow, rain, sun, three full cycles of it.

And it’s held up. The netting’s not ripped, which is the first thing I check because that mesh hopper is the part I expected to go. The actual wheels do what they’re supposed to do. Everything works great here. No replacement brushes bought, no bag re-stitched, no hitch pin replaced.

The only real ongoing cost is your time emptying it. Twenty cubic feet sounds enormous until you’re on a heavy clipping day and you’re pulling the dump rope more often than you planned. That’s the one friction point I’d flag.

The Longer Verdict

After three years of zero maintenance, it still works exactly as it did on day one, which is why it’s earned heavy rotation in my yard. The reason isn’t any single feature. It’s that after three years of neglect it still works exactly the way it worked on day one.

I’d push back on anyone buying this purely as a fall leaf tool. You’re leaving most of its value on the table. The summer clipping work is where mine earns its spot, and if you bag-mow or your mulching deck leaves rows behind, you’ll find yourself using it all summer instead of just fall.

Three years outside, zero maintenance, still picks up everything I throw at it. If you have a tractor and more than a quarter-acre, stop overthinking it and check the current price.

Pros

  • Three years outside with zero winter storage and the netting still isn’t ripped
  • Picks up old grass clippings as well as it picks up leaves
  • Wheels still roll properly after three full seasons
  • 42-inch sweep covers ground fast without being unwieldy
  • Dump rope means you empty it without getting off the tractor

Cons

  • The 20 cu. ft. hopper fills faster than the number suggests on a heavy clipping day
  • Needs a tow vehicle, so it’s useless if you only have a push mower
  • Takes up real storage space, which is why mine lives outdoors

Frequently Asked Questions

Will it hitch to a zero-turn mower?

Yes. The hitch is a universal system designed for lawn tractors, zero-turn mowers and ATVs. If your machine has a standard rear hitch plate you’re fine.

Does it work on wet grass?

Brush sweepers work best dry. Wet clippings clump and stick to the nylon brushes instead of flicking back into the hopper, so give the lawn a few hours after rain or dew if you can.

Can it handle pine cones and twigs?

Yes, that’s within what the four 10-inch brushes are rated for, along with pine needles and light debris. Heavy branches are a rake job, not a sweeper job.

Will the brushes tear up my turf?

Not if you set it right. The sweeping height is adjustable specifically so you can match it to lawn conditions and lift the brushes off the crowns. Set it too low and you’ll scuff thin spots.
